Welcome to the Practice Tavern
Embracing messy growth and magic. And why I renamed my newsletter (again).
Dear Reader,
I’ve gone through a few different names since starting this newsletter1:
In Between the Emptiness
Middle of Nowhere
Art Haven
And now…
The Practice Tavern!
I’ve given more thought to what I want this “space” to be. A place to document and share my ever-evolving creative and healing process—first and foremost for myself, but the door open to anyone who resonates. A space to practice showing up as authentically and boldly as I can—and hopefully, help others feel safe enough to do the same.
A space where you can show up as you are, even when—and maybe especially when—how you are is a little messy, a little chaotic, and involves a lot of flailing and crying and occasional cursing.
I’ve also always wanted to be a magical witchy owner of a cozy communal space and “tavern” sounds magical and old-timey and fun to say. And I would get to call myself the tavern keeper, and imagine the power and confidence you would hold if you were able to write “Magical Tavern Keeper” on your résumé.
Another thing, while I have you here…
This is something I shared back in December, but since the number of people here has grown quite a bit, I thought it would be nice to share again.
As I continue on this creative journey, I would love to learn a bit more about you. Specifically, what brought you to my newsletter in the first place, and what aspects of the creative journey you are most interested in hearing about. If you have a few moments to spare, your insights would mean so much to me as I continue documenting this path!
Here are some questions that you can use as a starting point. Feel free to answer one of them or all of them (or none of them); respond with a few words or a couple of sentences or a long ass paragraph; include your favourite fact about fungi or nebulae or not.
What made you subscribe initially?
Are there any newsletter issues or themes that have resonated with you the most?
What struggles do you face in your own creative practice?
Is there anything you’d love to see more of in this newsletter?
What about my art do you like/find unique?
As someone who wants to read All The Things but often finds reading difficult (for a variety of reasons) and time to be wibbly wobbly (the technical term), the fact that you take the time to read my writing means the world to me, and I don’t take that for granted. I hope that the things I send you every week bring you some joy and make you want to create more things.
If you have any thoughts you’d like to share, go ahead and leave a comment or send me an email reply!
I would love to hear from you!
Lucy Dacus’ cover of “Believe” by Cher. I just wanna roll around in her voice all day, enveloped in the softness and warmth and comforting weight2 of it, like the comfiest freaking weighted blanket you can’t even imagine.
I would love love love to create more commissions/soulscapes, and am offering ONE more commission at 50% off! Check out the link to learn more (like what the heck a soulscape is) and email nico@nicosakaki.com if you’re interested.
Until next time, magical human.
I hope you see some cherry blossoms this week.
If you’d like to support my work, you can buy me a “coffee” over on my Ko-fi page! Every little bit helps me to keep creating. <3
I’m realizing that the evolution of my newsletter (title) probably says a lot about how my creative practice and relationship with sharing my art has also evolved. Definitely something to explore further in future blog posts!
Is that the right word? I don’t know. Maybe body, fullness, expansiveness, grounding energy
Thank you for the intro Nico!
See you around the Interweb and enjoy! 🌐
I love the new name! And the idea that you are a witchy tavern keeper and I’m dropping by to sit in your space.
